Last week the Obama administration stated that the sign up for healthcare through Obamacare hit the one million mark. The administration sees this as a major milestone for the federal healthcare system that has been trouble some since the sign up started back in October. These people who signed up, mostly in December did so to meet the deadline to receive insurance starting January 1st, 2014. The numbers for sign up are as follows:
- October sign ups: 27,000
- November sign ups: 137,000
- December sign ups: 975,000
The surge in enrollment in December was due to the deadline and the push for more Americans to act now for health insurance. Not to mention that the healthcare.gov website seems to have worked out many of the problems which plagued the system early on and consumers felt reassured about signing up for Obamacare.
Even thought he website is being retooled there still are several problems that still need to be fixed. With almost a million signing up in December it is still unclear how many individuals actually visited the site and were unable to use it- across the country this is a large problem still plaguing the system. The day before the deadline the website received as many as 2 million views and the call center was inundated with over 250,000 calls.
The 1 million enrollments for Obamacare does not include the people who signed up through the state run exchanges. The District of Columbia and 14 other states run their own health care exchanges. While New York, California, Kentucky, Connecticut and have performed well, others are still struggling. California alone saw over 75,000 people choose a health care plan during the final days of sign up. One million sign ups do not include the new enrollments for Medicaid as well. By November 30th Medicaid had over 800,000 eligible for the program.
If you missed the December 24th deadline you can still sign up for Obamacare. To receive coverage starting February 1st individuals must sign up by January 15th. Open enrollment for the year ends on March 31st and a penalty may be accessed to individuals who do not have any type of health insurance. The administration is expecting an even bigger surge in enrollment in March than what they received in December. The goal is to have 7 million individuals enroll for healthcare through the state and federal exchanges by March 31st.
Hopefully with the website now adjusted to handle larger volumes without stalling or crashing the Obama administration plane to increase its campaign in January to reach more individuals to encourage people to sign up for health care.
